Tatiana de Los Reyes and Anthony Masterson

Tatiana de Los Reyes da Silva grew up in Brazil and Anthony Loyola Masterson was raised in the northeastern U.S. But they’re quite the opposite of their respective national stereotypes. De Los Reyes embodies all-American drive, while Masterson has the easygoing, fun-loving style of a bossa nova. And they were drawn together by a profound passion for music.

“Music lifts me up,” said de Los Reyes. “I cannot function without music.” Masterson agreed. “It makes your heart leap with joy,” he said.

The Santa Monica couple met — where else? — at a concert. It was Feb. 18, 2010, jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood playing the El Rey Theatre. De Los Reyes, a public relations specialist for the music company Airflow Productions, sat in the VIP section. Masterson, an investment counselor with TD Ameritrade, had scored a VIP pass and found himself seated near a lovely woman who was all by herself. He said, “Hello, aren’t these guys great?” And before long these two soloists were playing a beautiful duet.

Though de Los Reyes, 33, and Masterson, 48, grew up in different countries and in different musical eras, they say their relationship is like the improbable collaboration between two of their idols — Brazilian jazz singer Flora Purim and the Grateful Dead.

Masterson proposed Dec. 3 on the very spot where they met, in the balcony of the El Rey. They were married May 7 at St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica. Cantors Michele Crenshaw and son Harrison Crenshaw, accompanied by pianist David Lockwood, performed selections that ranged from Bach to Leonard Cohen.

The reception for 104 guests took place at the Victorian, a historic mansion and garden in Santa Monica. Deejay Bradley Burlingame emceed, and dancing kicked into high gear with the band Eyedentity and solos by musician friends.

The bride and groom had the time of their lives. “It was spectacular,” said Masterson. “Perfect, amazing.”
