Jazz master Benny Carter, July 12

Alto saxophonist, composer and jazz legend Benny Carter, pictured in New York's East Village in 1997, died on July 12. He was 95. His compositions, which include "When Lights Are Low" (1936) and "Blues in My Heart" (1931), became jazz and big band standards, and many saxophone and trumpet players continue to measure their work against his solos.
