A Spotsylvania County man killed himself on Interstate 95 Tuesday after he fatally shot another man at a motel in Caroline County, police said.
The Caroline County Sheriff's Office said Todd T. Houck, 36, is suspected of killing Jeremy Gift, 36, of Stafford in a room at the Relax Inn in Bowling Green. Authorities said Houck then abducted a woman from the room.
Deputy sheriffs responding to the shooting saw a sport utility vehicle fleeing and pursed it. The chase went through Bowling Green and then onto I-95 in Spotsylvania County, where Virginia State Police joined in the pursuit.
State troopers and county deputies surrounded the vehicle, forcing it to slow down until it rammed the back of a state police cruiser. The SUV came to a stop and a shot was fired.
Houck was found dead inside the SUV with what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said. The woman, whose name was not released, was taken from the SUV uninjured.
Houck is the son of former state Sen. Edd Houck, a Democrat who served from 1984 until 2012.
Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa Jr. said the shooting was "a domestic situation" but he declined to be specific about the relationships between the men and the woman.
The sheriff's office and the state police are both investigating. Neither Lippa nor state police spokeswoman Corinne Geller could immediately say what kind of gun was used in the shootings.
Court records show Todd Houck had a lengthy criminal history, including a grand larceny conviction and several drug offenses that resulted in jail sentences.
The incident comes nearly two years after state Sen.
was stabbed by his son, Austin "Gus" Deeds, who then killed himself with a rifle at the family's rural Bath County home.
had been released 13 hours earlier from an emergency custody order after a mental health clinician failed to find a psychiatric bed so that he could undergo further evaluation. Gus Deeds' death prompted a series of legislative initiatives intended to improve mental health services.
