Lodging options

The Chicago Tribune

Beaver Creek's reputation for luxury lodging is fully justified. High-end amenities and service abound throughout the lodging choices at the base of the mountain, in both hotel and condo-style accommodations.

The family focus is especially clear, with roughly 80 percent of the available lodging being condominium or townhouse. A new Ritz-Carlton is scheduled to open in 2002 at Bachelor Gulch. Avon, located in the valley below the mountain, has a higher proportion of hotel rooms.

As at all ski resorts, the prices vary throughout the season, and special deals are frequently available at off-peak periods. The prices listed are for low season. Among the choices:

LUXURY

The Hyatt Regency Beaver Creek (970-845-2849 or www.beavercreek.hyatt.com) and the Inn at Beaver Creek epitomize luxury hotel accommodations. Both are slope-side, and both pamper their guests, albeit in different atmospheres. The Hyatt offers a more modern approach, complete with 2 large swimming pools, two lounges and a magnificent spa. Prices start at $430 per night. The Inn has more of an old-fashioned ski lodge "feel," but it also has a pool and sauna. The Inn's prices start at $300 per night and include continental breakfast.

If you prefer the condo mode in this category, try the St. James Place. Located on the village square about 100 yards from the lifts, it has a large indoor pool, two hot tubs and large, spectacularly furnished units. Prices start at $395 for a one-bedroom with hide-a-bed; two bedroom units start at $515, but easily accommodate six people.

MODERATE

The Borders Lodge is a ski-in/ski-out condo that has many of the same amenities of the more luxurious condominiums, but is a bit farther from the village square. A two-bedroom unit starts at $220 per night. At Arrowhead, three-bedroom townhomes that sleep eight are available with starting prices of $275 per night.

ECONOMY

The Brookside Lodge in Avon has spacious two-bedroom condos that start at $200, including a well-equipped kitchen, an indoor pool and free 10-minute shuttle to the slopes. The Comfort Inn-Beaver Creek (970-949-5511) is located in Avon and offers rooms from $65 to $228 in non-peak season.

Reservations for the Inn at Beaver Creek, St. James Place, Borders, the Arrowhead townhomes and Brookside all are handled through Vail-Beaver Creek Resort Properties (800-859-8242 or www.vbcrp.com) or Vail Resorts Central Reservations (800-427-8308 or www.vailresorts.com).
