Cameron says he "trained at the Roger Corman film school," referencing his time doing effects for the legendary (and legendarily cheap) b-movie impresario. That's why credits like Battle Beyond the Stars and Galaxy of Terror show up on his rap sheet. His second director's credit comes from Piranha II: The Spawning, which involves itty bitty aquatic eating machines with wings. (Tagline:"The Terror Is Back....But This Time It Flies!") That's probably not something Cameron advertises. Of course, his next film was Terminator, then Aliens, then The Abyss. Then there was that movie where an innocent iceberg is attacked by a marauding cruise ship (Isn't that the plot you remember from Titanic?) But who knows -- maybe those flying piranhas in his past explains the near shut-out for Avatar. Ouch.
