Shonda Rimes has a bone to pick with people trying to describe her new show, "Off The Map." The creator of "Grey's Anatomy" and Private Practice" isn't just moving one of her medical dramas to the jungle, she says. Instead, think of it as "[putting] the scalpel in the hands of Indiana Jones."
And unlike the elite physicians at Seattle Grace Hospital, the characters in "Off the Map" won't be topping any lists of medical superstars. Showrunner Jenna Bans describes the doctors as "characters who really aren't at the top of their game professionally or personally…they need to reinvent themselves."
It's a good bet that said reinvention involves adapting to their surroundings. "The jungle is their pharmacy, their medicine cabinet," Bans says. OK, but will it also be their elevator, the site of love declarations and other dramatic reveals?
Then there are the possibilities brought about by the foreign setting. Although the show is filmed in Hawaii, it takes place in a fictional South American city. The show promises to take advantage of this by bringing in Latin guest stars, such as Cheech Marin and Judy Reyes.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
