October 5 - Steven Hayes convicted of Petit family murders

On October 5, over three years after the brutal attack and murder of three members of the Petit family in Connecticut, suspect Steven Hayes was convicted of murder and later sentenced to death in Connecticut. During the trial jurors heard the gruesome story of how Hayes, and alleged accomplice Joshua Komisarjevsky, tied up the family at their home, raped and killed Jennifer Hawke-Petit (48), Hayley Petit (17), and Michaela Petit (11). The sole surviver of the attack, husband and father William Petit (in picture), listened to all the testimony in both the trial and sentencing phase. Komisarjevsky will be tried in 2011.
