Mothers take center stage at Colony Theatre to share their stories

Share

This Sunday, one man and several women — some of them mothers, all of them with stories to tell about mothers — will share their personal stories about moms at the Colony Theatre.

The event has drawn several Burbank residents to participate and is part of a national series that has taken place annually across North America, including Canada, called, “Listen To Your Mother.”

This is the first year Burbank has joined the effort, and about 40 other cities are putting together shows this year.

The local performance is directed and produced by Burbank parents Taia Perry and Suzanne Weerts

While Weerts regularly participates in storytelling herself at Story Salon in North Hollywood, this marks her first time directing a show.

“I found the opportunity to express myself through storytelling to be such an empowering experience and wonderful way to communicate my creativity, so I was excited to give that experience to other moms like me, who may have allowed their love of writing to take a back seat as they raised their children,” she said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Burbank’s Family Service Agency, which provides counseling to local individuals and families.

The 90-minute show involves stories of heartache and joy surrounding motherhood, including losing a mother or a child.

“Many of them are hilarious and some of them are poignant and touching,” Weerts said. “We want people to laugh, and we also want them to be touched.”

Thirty-eight people auditioned, with 13 selected for the performance. While some of the performers have professional writing or acting experience, most are new to storytelling.

“It’s a mix of people who are very, very brave to get up there, having never done anything like this before — to get up and tell a story that’s very personal,” Weerts said.

The show will begin at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Colony Theatre, 555 N. Third St. in Burbank. Tickets cost $25.
