City Manager Mark Scott’s retirement date has been set for Feb. 5, the city announced this week. According to the terms of his contract, the retirement date must be mutually established between the elected members of the City Council and the city manager.

The announcement followed a special closed session meeting of the City Council on Monday to discuss Scott’s recently announced decision to retire after a disagreement with the council on the reclassification of a city employee’s job title, specification and salary — an item some officials have said should have been a formality.

Scott, who began working as the head administrator for the city in the summer of 2013, will continue in his post until his retirement date.

“Mark has reassured the City Council that he will be available to assist us in the transition as we find a replacement,” Mayor Bob Frutos said in a statement this week. “We are grateful to Mark for his service to the City of Burbank and wish him well in his future endeavors.”

Burbank is the fifth city Scott has managed in a 38-year career in city management. He previously spent three years as Fresno city manager.

“I am thankful for the privilege of serving the Burbank community, working with such a dedicated City Council and talented staff team,” Scott said in a statement.

The council members discussed recruitment of a new city manager also in closed session Monday, but there is not yet a timetable for when a decision will be made.
