St. Francis Xavier students competed in the state Archdiocese Junior High Academic Decathlon finals in Sacramento on April 1, said Patrick Flynn, one of several team coaches who spent months preparing the students to compete.

The team, made up of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders, won first overall in the logic portion of the competition, and several members placed in individual competitions in which students were tested in their knowledge of mathematics or current events.

In the local competition, St. Francis Xavier’s team finished second overall out of 105 schools in the Los Angeles Archdiocese Junior High Academic Decathlon last month.
