Burbank police see an increase in violent and property crimes, according to report

The number of violent and property crimes reported in Burbank, when combined, jumped 9% through June of this year when compared to the same period last year, according to a preliminary midyear crime report released by the Burbank Police Department.

Violent crime, which includes rape, murder, robbery and aggravated assault, jumped 46%, from 69 incidents reported through June of last year to 101 incidents through June of this year.

Driving that increase was an uptick in aggravated assaults, which jumped from 39 through June of last year to 67 during the same period this year, according to the report.

No homicides have been reported in Burbank this year, nor were any reported through June of last year.

Meanwhile, property crime — which includes burglary, theft and arson — jumped 7%, from 1,286 incidents through June of last year to 1,371 this year.

The most dramatic jump in property crime came from a 43% increase in burglaries. Police logged 204 burglaries through June, compared to 143 during the same period last year.

Officers this year responded to 236 high-priority calls, which include felonies in progress, in an average of three minutes and 33 seconds. Through June of last year, officers responded to 241 high-priority calls in an average of three minutes and 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, total calls for service increased by 10%, from 21,839 calls through June of last year to 23,959 during the same period this year.

Officer-initiated activity, however, plummeted by 27%, from 17,076 incidents logged during the first half of last year to 12,511 this year.
