Eight cars caught fire Sunday afternoon after an unknown liquid flowing down a street gutter ignited in Burbank, authorities say.

The cars were parked along North Lincoln Street in the 1800 block when the fire broke out around 2:45 p.m., according to Battalion Chief John Owings, a spokesman for the Burbank Fire Department.

He said three of the eight vehicles were destroyed by the fire.

Investigators are unsure what the liquid was or how it caught fire, according to Owings.

Several fire engines and trucks were called to the scene, and the flames were extinguished within 10 minutes. Also, firefighters were able to prevent the liquid from entering a nearby storm drain.

Owings said structures near where the fire broke out suffered only minor damage.

Fire investigators are looking into the incident.
