Burroughs High baseball player Kyle Nicol has moved on and has been competing for and training with Cal State Northridge during the summer.

Although Nicol, a pitcher who completed a successful senior season for the Indians during the 2016 campaign, is no longer at Burroughs, he is still earning accolades.

The right-handed submarine hurler recently earned another award when he garnered third-team all-state honors from Cal-Hi Sports.

“It was a real surprise when I found out that I was all-state,” Nicol said. “It was something that I really wasn’t even thinking about to be honest. I really didn’t know much about it. I really wasn’t expecting anything past being named All-CIF.”

The all-state honor is the most recent accolade earned by Nicol after turning in a fine season for the Indians. Along with being named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division II second team, Nicol was also honored as the co-Pacific League Player of the Year.

“It’s a pretty cool honor to be named an all-state player,” Nicol said. “There are a lot of good baseball players in California and to be named with them is pretty awesome.”

Earning the spot as Burroughs’ No. 1 pitcher, Nicol had a 7-2 record and threw 56 2/3 innings. He had 66 strikeouts and 14 walks with a 1.48 earned-run average.

Nicol’s signature victory of the season came on March 9 when he pitched Burroughs to a 1-0 win against Harvard-Westlake in the championship game of the Easton Tournament. Nicol struck out 14 in a two-hit shutout.

With Nicol leading the way, Burroughs went 19-7 and had a 12-2 showing in league to capture a share of its second straight league crown. The Indians shared the title with Crescenta Valley.

“The goal for me during the season wasn’t really to win awards,” Nicol said. “Winning them is nice, but that’s not what I was focused on. I just wanted to give my best every single day, every single outing and to do all I could for the team.”
