Letter: God and guns fill the Forum page

Share

I found it interesting and somewhat amusing that the Forum section of the Leader on Saturday, Jan. 23, was so completely devoted to religion. The religion of football and the view of God with a gun in Charlie Hebdo. It puts me in mind of the classic country song “Drop Kick Me Jesus Through the Goal Posts of Life.”

Both the nation’s game and organized religion have hit on some tough times lately. People are starting to realize that it’s pretty stupid for very large men to run into each other at top speed.

Brain trauma is ubiquitous and fatalities are on the rise. Eleven high school players died last year while playing. I say this as the son of a football coach. I played until my sophomore year in college when injuries ended my career.

Hopefully people are also starting to realize that different religious cultures should not run into each other at top speed. Fatalities are also building up in that bloody arena. No organized religion’s hands are clean in this historic arena. Muslims, Christians and Jews have all taken part in fratricidal wars since ancient times.

Until human beings can celebrate the million things we have in common, we will be doomed to kill each other over the beliefs that separate us. What we need is a Super Bowl for empathy.
