One of the first things I learned as a new member of the Burbank Civic Pride Committee was the effort the committee was going to place on the annual Halloween Decorating Contest.

Fifty applications were received, a new record for the contest. At the Oct. 26 meeting of the committee, Chairman Robert Vincent informed us we would board a city bus a couple of nights later to tour all the contestants’ properties and select the winners. Chad Garland, a reporter for the Leader, attended our meeting. He wanted to know the winners by Friday so he could publish their names and addresses in the Oct. 31 edition of The Leader. A communication line was set-up so he would have the information.

Very late Oct. 29, after spending three hours touring the sites, the Civic Pride Committee exited the bus, talked and decided on the winners. Garland received the information the next morning, and wrote a very nice story in Saturday’s Leader.

At this week’s City Council meeting, Vice Mayor Jess Talamantes and “Civic Pride Committee” Chairman Vincent presented the winners with their awards. The residential winners were the Robert Taylor family, who live on North Lima Street.

After the meeting I spoke with the Taylors, who have been decorating their house for many years. Mrs. Taylor said that in years past, they would likely get around 200 trick-or-treaters coming to their door. This Halloween they had 800 people come to their door. Everyone said they read about it in the Burbank Leader.

Asked what her neighbors thought, Mrs. Taylor said some were disgruntled, but for the most part everyone was supportive. Totally amazing! Can you imagine 800 people coming to your door?

Love living in Burbank!
