Letter: Pet medicine was triple the cost

Share

I just had an interesting experience and learned something I never knew. I am writing because I believe many others are not aware of this. I had to take my pooch to a Burbank vet for a growth on his lip. I was given an antibiotic prescription for him that cost $112 for 24 tabs. I decided to do a little research on this. I went to the Cornell University website where they post the retail cost of pet medications. The actual retail cost of the 24 tabs was less than $38.

I called my vet to ask about this. I was told that it was common practice in vets offices to triple the cost of medications. I asked if I was required to buy the meds from them. I was told no, they would give me the prescription and I could get it filled anywhere I want. I think it is very unfair that I had to find this out after the fact. They should have told me of this option up front.

I don’t know much about state regulation on veterinary offices but I think this should be a common regulation.
