Mailbag: Spy talk slated at Burbank Historical Society museum

A genocide on American soil

Since the Burbank Unified School Board is setting aside the month of April as a commemoration for the Armenian Genocide, I would suggest all of them read “An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe” by UCLA professor Benjamin Madley and declare a month dedicated to the genocide of Native Americans. It is all about relevancy. Oh, but wait, Native Americans are not represented here, are they?

Free talk eyes spies of the past

We’d like to invite all Burbankers to our free program at the Burbank Historical Society museum from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today. This program is sure to fascinate everyone.

Did you know that there are signs of enemy spies right here in our midst during the 1930s and ‘40s? Come learn all about it. See actual FBI documents, photos of alleged enemy “headquarters,” letters from J. Edgar Hoover and much more. Our program promises to intrigue, mesmerize, even frighten you — and you’ll be glued to your seat.

The Burbank Historical Society/Gordon R. Howard Museum is located next to the Creative Arts Center in George Izay (Olive) Park, Free parking is behind the park, off Clark Street. For more information, visit www.burbankhistoricalsoc.org.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Blumenfeld understands us

I have lived in Burbank for about 50 years, was a teacher in Burbank Unified School District for more than three decades, and was elected three times to serve on the Burbank Board of Education. The majority of my adult life has been dedicated to this community, and especially to its children.

I am now supporting Andrew Blumenfeld in his candidacy to represent us in the California State Assembly because he exhibits the qualities and values that are so important to me.

Ballots for vote-by-mail are likely in your mailbox, and election day is June 7. So now is the time to get serious about how you will cast your vote in this important contest.

Like many of you, I want someone to represent us who is truly a public servant to our community, not beholden to special interests, and not someone who believes your vote can be earned by flooding your mailbox with catch phrases and attack ads. That candidate is Andrew Blumenfeld.

You may have met Andrew Blumenfeld as he goes door-to-door in our town, or at one of the many community meetings he has held over the last several months. Andrew understands that the issues that we face are complex, and demand our full engagement.

I don’t make these decisions lightly, and I know your don’t either. Please visit Andrew Blumenfeld’s website, Andrew4Assembly.com, to learn more, and join me in voting for him to represent us, and to serve us in the state Assembly.
