Thursday is typically the day for “throwbacks” on social media, but it seemed hard to miss a blast from the past on Wednesday when fans celebrated the “Back to the Future” film trilogy on the day when Marty McFly arrived 30 years into the future in the 1989 second installment of the movie series.

Fans weren’t just being nostalgic on Twitter and Facebook. Crowds of fans gathered at a Burger King in Burbank at 545 N Victory Blvd., decked out in denim and puffy red vests like McFly, the movie’s protagonist played by Michael J. Fox, for the “Million McFly March,” which organizers said would benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The restaurant was featured in the opening minutes of the movie where McFly skateboards through the drive-thru.

“Even though the BK is under renovation, they’re still hosting us, because they’re awesome,” the organizers said in a Facebook post for the event. The restaurant was closed for remodeling after a grease fire in August.

Burbank resident Jason Klamm, who organized the march with his wife, Jennifer Smith, said they had initially expected 100 to 150 participants, but by 5 p.m. they had seen an estimated 600 people.
