Burroughs girls’ basketball triumphant over Arcadia

BURBANK — Throughout the decade, the Burroughs High girls’ basketball team has dominated the Pacific League.

Under Coach Vicky Oganyan, the Indians have won four straight league championships and five overall since the beginning of the 2010-11 campaign.

Through the first two games of league play, the Indians have made it clear they don’t want their reign to end.

Marin Grote finished with 15 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks and Kamryn Cardenaz added 17 points Friday to spur host Burroughs to a 46-32 league victory against Arcadia.

The Indians have won 44 consecutive league games, including 27 straight at home. Burroughs’ last league loss came Feb. 7, 2013, at Burbank.

“You don’t want to be the team that ends the [league] streak,” said Cardenaz, a senior forward. “That’s why you go out there and play hard every game.

“It’s all about putting in the hard work and giving your best effort every game. We just want to keep it going.”

Burroughs (10-7, 2-0 in league) never trailed against Arcadia (8-7, 0-2). Grote had two offensive rebounds and converted them into baskets on Burroughs’ first two possessions to set the tone in the first of two head-to-head meetings with Arcadia.

Grote finished with five offensive rebounds for the Indians, who advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I-A semifinals last season.

“I thought we did a good job of coming out early and controlling the play,” said Grote, who had 11 points in the first half. “We didn’t do that so much against Pasadena [on Tuesday].

“We had everybody clicking right from the start tonight and that made a big difference. We have a lot of seniors and they bring experience and a lot of depth.”

Grote, a senior center, converted on a three-point play to give the Indians a 15-10 lead with 6:15 remaining in the second quarter. Grote then closed out the first-half scoring when she grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the buzzer to make it 28-19.

Cardenaz finished with nine second-half points. She made a basket to give Burroughs a 36-23 lead with 2:30 left in the third quarter. She then put the game away with a short shot to make it 46-30 with 2:36 to play in the fourth quarter.

Burroughs also received seven points from Ariana Farias and five from Jocelyn Rieken.

“We expect every game to be tough in our league,” Oganyan said. “It gives you very good preparation.

“Our players have been good about following our plan. We’ve been playing very good defense and we didn’t give up too many second-chance attempts. When you have people like Marin and Kamryn, they bring experience and the other players want to follow them. The younger players feed off them.”

Arcadia got 10 points and 10 rebounds from Kennedy Lyles and eight points from Ashley Sue.

Burroughs and Arcadia will meet again Jan. 27 at Arcadia.
