James Williams (Burbank High, 2015) Washington State football freshman: Big-play ability that once thrilled the Burbank High faithful is now paying dividends at Washington State as Williams is keying a balanced Cougars running game with a team-leading 435 yards rushing and 6.2 yards per carry.

Williams rushed for a team-high 72 yards and a four-yard touchdown in 12 carries and nine catches for 45 yards and an eight-yard touchdown in No. 23 Washington State’s 69-7 thrashing of Arizona on Saturday.

With the victory, Washington State improved to 7-2, 6-0 in the Pac-12 Conference as the Cougars remain one of two remaining teams undefeated in the conference with rival Washington.

WSU scored on its first six possessions to blow out Arizona.

“It feels amazing,” Williams told the Associated Press.

WSU will host California on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in a game set to air on ESPN.

So far, Williams has 70 carries for 435 yards and five touchdowns as one of three Cougars running backs with more than 60 carries. He also has 35 catches for 245 yards and the one touchdown against Arizona.

Williams turned in his two best performances thus far in back-to-back games.

On Sept. 17 in a 56-6 win over Idaho, he had season-highs (and career-highs) of 14 carries and 126 yards rushing and added a touchdown. In a 51-33 win over Oregon on Oct. 1, he had 11 carries for 91 yards and two touchdowns, adding five catches for 33 yards.

Arman Momdzhyan (Clark Magnet High, 2013) UC San Diego water polo junior: From leading Glendale High to a CIF Southern Section championship to fostering success for L.A. Valley College, Momdzhyan is now leading the way in San Diego.

In San Diego’s most recent contest, a 7-5 loss to UC Davis, Momdzhyan had a team-high two goals and an assist.

On the season, he leads the Tritons with 31 goals and also has nine steals and seven assists.

With a 13-7 mark that includes a 5-1 record in the Western Water Polo Assn., UCSD has a pair of exhibition matches on Saturday before opening up the WWPA Tournament on Nov. 18 against Fresno Pacific.

Claire Kostelnik (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2013) St. Mary’s College of Maryland soccer senior: With the release Wednesday of the All-Capital Athletic Conference women’s soccer team, Kostelnik was bestowed second-team honors, which was the third and final conference accolade of her career at St. Mary’s.

The midfielder earned second-team honors as a freshman and All-CAC first-team recognition as a junior last season.

For the Seahawks, who finished 10-6-2, 6-2-1 in conference, Kostelnik, a team captain, led the way with a team-high five assists to go along with three goals. From Sept. 18 through Oct. 7, Kostelnik had a goal or an assist in five straight games in which she played. The last point of her career was an assist on Oct. 26 in a 3-2 loss at York.

St. Mary’s season and Kostelnik’s career came to a close on Nov. 2 in a 1-1 (4-2) setback against Frostburg State in the conference tournament semifinals.

Zachary Tomlinson (Burbank High, 2012) La Verne football senior: With one game left to the season on Saturday at Whittier, it’s been a rough campaign for Tomlinson and the Leopards, who have lost three in a row to drop to 1-7 and 1-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The one victory so far was a memorable one, though, as Tomlinson rallied the Leopards to a 57-56 win against Occidental on Oct. 15 at La Verne’s homecoming.

Trailing, 56-49, late in the game, Tomlinson hit Daejohn Logan for a 41-yard touchdown with 1:04 left to play. The Leopards went for the win and Tomlinson connected with Alex Arellano for the game-winning two-point conversion.

Tomlinson finished the night with four touchdowns as he completed 14 of 19 passes for 205 yards with one interception.

On the season, in which Tomlinson has played in seven games, he has passed for 822 yards and five touchdowns with four interceptions. He’s completed 66 of 120 passes.

In Saturday’s 21-20 loss to Pomona-Pitzer, Tomlinson completed 12 of 26 passes for 212 yards.

Garrett Auproux (Burroughs High, 2013) Cal Poly tennis senior: A returning All-Big West Conference first-team singles selection, Auproux and the Mustangs got off to a terrific start in the fall season.

Cal Poly won the team title at the College Tennis Invitational in Napa, which ran from Sept. 9-11. Against Oklahoma State, Tulsa and UNLV, Auproux and Josh Ortlip won all three of their doubles sets, while Auproux won two of three in singles.

At the International Tennis Assn. Southwest Regional Classic in Malibu, which concluded on Oct. 24, Auproux and Tim Tan advanced to the men’s open doubles semifinals, where they lost to the No. 5 seed of Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp of UCLA, 8-5, concluding their run at 3-1. In singles, Auproux lost in the round of 64 before advancing to the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket, going 2-2.

In Cal Poly’s final fall action before resuming play on Jan. 20 at Fresno State, Auproux went a combined 1-2 in singles and doubles play at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships at USC, which concluded on Halloween.

Maddie Carlborg (Burbank High, 2013) Wellesley soccer senior: Carlborg wrapped up her days at Wellesley as a major contributor, tallying six goals and two assists.

Her six goals were second on the team and her assists were tied for first.

Carlborg had a goal and an assist in Wellesley’s 4-0 win at the Coast Guard on Oct. 25. The points were the last for Carlborg and the win was the last of the season for Wellesley, which lost its last two matches and finished 7-10-1, 4-5-1 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference.

Jocelyn Cervantes (Bellarmine-Jefferson, 2012) Cal State Stanislaus volleyball senior: Heading into Friday night’s California Collegiate Athletic Assn. match at Cal State Los Angeles, Cervantes, having played in all 25 of her team’s matches and 80 sets, has 15 kills, 39 assists, 17 aces and 250 digs.
