Sports roundup: Burroughs girls’ water polo doubles up San Marino in opener

Burroughs 10, San Marino 5: The Indians opened their season Tuesday with a nonleague victory at home.

Dominique Silva and Lizzy Wrobel had four goals each and goalkeeper Kate Wilke made 14 saves for Burroughs.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Wildwood 5, Providence 4: The Pioneers battled back, but fell just short in a nonleague match Tuesday at Occidental College to open their season.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Ribet Academy 42, Burbank 27: The Bulldogs (1-1) received 12 points and 11 rebounds from Christina Mkrtchyan and Osanna Tirityan had 10 points in the loss Tuesday in pool play of the San Marino Tournament.

Burbank 52, South Pasadena 49: Christina Mkrtchyan scored 18 points and grabbed five rebounds and Osanna Tirityan added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs on Monday as they opened their season with a pool-play game in the San Marino Tournament.

Sabrina Zakaria added seven rebounds and five assists and Celline Shamalian had five steals for Burbank.

The Bulldogs trailed, 37-34, after three quarters but outscored the Tigers, 18-12, in the fourth.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Compton Centennial 57, Providence 41: The Pioneers opened their season Monday with a loss in pool play of the El Monte Tournament.

Jason Batungbacal scored 12 points and Brian Cabagnot and Kirk Helling shipped in with seven points apiece.
