Six Indians net All-Pacific League praise

Freshman Manny Gonzalez had a record-breaking 2016-17 boys’ soccer season for Burroughs High.

Gonzalez, a freshman, was one of three Indians to earn All-Pacific League first-team honors, as six Burroughs players earned selections. Two players from Burbank were named all-league.

Joining Gonzalez on the first team were junior forward Esteban Alcantar and sophomore midfielder Carlos Rosales.

Making the second team were senior defender Jake Von and sophomore forward David Gerlach for Burroughs, along with Burbank senior forward Andy Cardenas. Honorable mention went to Indians senior defender Topli Petko and Bulldogs senior forward Andrew Senane.

Gonzalez led his team with 16 goals (11 in league) and had nine assists, both new Burroughs record marks for a freshman. He is the first Indians freshman in 35 years to earn all-league accolades.

“For Manny to make it as a freshman from our program is really big,” said Burroughs coach Mike Kodama, whose team finished 15-9-1 and 9-4-1 in league, placing second behind Crescenta Valley. “He just learned so much throughout the season and he got better as the year went on. He scored a lot more goals early on in the season, but as the year went on he was setting up more goals. As a freshman, there is a lot to learn and he really adjusted well.”

Alcantar scored 10 goals, eight of which came in league, and dished out eight assists.

“Esteban had a great year for us,” Kodama said. “He started out in the middle and we were looking for a center-forward and we put him up top and he really came through. A lot of the growth of our team came from Esteban and Manny working together. ... He scored and set up a lot of big goals, but more importantly was his movement off the ball and his ability to read the game.”

Rosales finished with one goal and eight assists.

“Carlos just made everything work for us,” Kodama said. “He had the engine to work really hard and he always came to play, which was a great example for the team. We were able to move the ball because of Carlos and also he was the one who was first to make the big defensive play for us.”

Gerlach had five goals and three assists and Petko finished with four goals and seven assists.

After going winless the previous season, Burbank finished 5-9-4 and 4-8-2 in league for sixth place.
