Ex-mayor named to water district panel

The Laguna Beach County Water District appointed former Laguna Beach Mayor Jane Egly to the district’s commission last week.

Egly fills the spot left by former water commissioner Bruce Scherer, who died in November. Egly served on the district’s board from 2005 through 2012 while on the City Council. Council members automatically serve as the water district board during their terms. Commissioners advise board members.

During her 2012 term as board president, Egly joined mayors across the country in asking residents to make a commitment to conserve water and cut pollution by taking part in the Mayors Challenge for Water Conservation.

Egly, an experienced litigator and community leader, has devoted many hours to community service. She is an environmental sustainability advocate.

“[Egly’s] knowledge, passion, and balanced judgment regarding water issues are a tremendous asset to our community,” district General Manager Renae Hinchey said in a statement. “During this historic drought, her commitment to water use efficiency further complements the work the commission and district customers have done to meet [Gov. Jerry Brown’s] 25% mandatory statewide water reduction.”
