Brush fire burns nearly 50 acres at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park

Share

Laguna Coast Wilderness Park remained closed Tuesday as about 30 firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority and Cal Fire monitored a 50-acre charrerd area for any possible flare-ups, OCFA Capt. Larry Kurtz said.

The fire is out, though authorities are considering it 85% contained because there is a rugged section of the park that makes it difficult to fully surround the area with a fire break, Kurtz said.

“People will not see any smoke or flames,” Kurtz said.

Crews used hand tools to create a line around the perimeter of the fire to ensure embers do not cause unburned fuel — vegetation — to reignite, Laguna Beach Fire Chief Jeff LaTendresse said.

Laguna police and fire started receiving calls shortly before 1 p.m. Sunday of a vegetation fire in a remote section of the park near the Laguna Ridge trail.

More than 100 firefighters from various agencies — including Laguna Beach, the OCFA, Brea, Anaheim and Fullerton — battled the fire on foot and with planes and helicopters dropping fire retardant.

No homes were threatened and authorities did not order any evacuations. Laguna Canyon Road was closed for six hours Sunday.

Officials are still investigating the fire’s cause, LaTendresse said Monday.
