Laguna Beach Police Department employees will join Special Olympics athletes at Ruby’s Diner on July 23 for a fundraiser to benefit the organization’s Orange County region.

The Tip-A-Cop event will run from noon to 5 p.m. at the restaurant located at 30622 S. Coast Hwy. in Laguna Beach.

Officers and Special Olympics athletes will meet and greet customers, help take and deliver drink and food orders and interact with restaurant guests. Special Olympics offers year-round sports opportunities to athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Customers are encouraged to “tip the cop” for their service with a tax-deductible donation, 100% of which will go to the Special Olympics program. This donation is in addition to the customary tip left for the restaurant’s server.

Police will have several displays at Ruby’s, including a car, motorcycle, K-9 unit and a mini jail. There will also be fingerprinting and face painting stations, along with a balloon artist.

Laguna and other police agencies have a longstanding relationship with the Special Olympics, according to a news release.

Special Olympics relies on fundraisers for the many services it provides for more than four million athletes, according to the organization’s website.
