Laguna Beach fifth-grade All-Net team keeps winning

The Laguna Beach Breakers fifth-grade All-Net team is on a six-game winning streak after it defeated the Capo Valley Evolution, 48-32, and Brea Select, 40-35, in a pair of weekend National Junior Basketball games.

Ben Neufeld started the game hot against Brea Select, leading an 8-0 run by stealing the ball and dishing assists to Griffin Naess. Oliver Rounaghi, Devon Connelly and Boden Gillette controlled the backcourt with great leadership. Mason Herr, Noah Liao and Luke Meisberger added front-court toughness and strong defense. Taylor Towe ended Brea’s hope for a comeback by stealing the ball in the closing seconds and making a layup to secure a five-point victory.

The Breakers play their next game at home at 9 a.m. Saturday at Thurston Middle School.

Laguna Beach 46, King Basketball Club 35: Defense proved to be the key Saturday for the Breakers who picked up another league victory against San Clemente’s King Basketball Club.

Will Compton, Arthur Rounaghi and Matt Berk pressured KBC’s guards on defense and that defense led to many easy baskets. The Breakers front line of Gavin Trevino, Nolan Naess and Jack Payne controlled the rebounds.

Laguna point guard Willie Rounaghi dished out assists to Nolan Naess (26 points), Jack Payne (eight points) and Gavin Trevino who hit a clutch, three-point basket). Rounaghi also scored nine points on three three-pointers.

The Breakers, who improved to 4-3 in league, are back in action at 10 a.m. Saturday for a home game against the OC Regulators at Thurston Middle School.

Boys’ Division 1

Florida 45, Laguna Beach 30: Florida scored the final 15 points of the game to pull away in the fifth quarter from the Breakers.

Chase Hall led Laguna in scoring with 15 points, followed by Taro Sakai with 11 points, and Miles Riehl and Jack Pigott each contributed two points.

The Breakers, who were missing key players Kaden Herr and Charlie Pillsbury, were sloppy in large stretches of the game that proved to be the team’s downfall. Evan Henry and Timmy Crawford provided solid defense and rebounding for the Breakers who fell to 1-5.
