Laguna perfect in league again

The Laguna Beach High boys’ golf team is an undefeated league champion.

Again.

The Breakers secured the feat for a second-straight year Tuesday by completing their Orange Coach League schedule with a 209-231 road victory over Costa Mesa at Mesa Linda Golf Course in Costa Mesa.

Laguna’s low medalist was sophomore Kyle Sharp who shot a five-over par 35. Also contributing to the Breakers’ point total were sophomore Dante Fornaro (41), senior Max Brown (42), freshman Chase Gioffredi (42), senior Will Uzelac 44, and senior Adam Mundy (45).

Sharp also took low medalist honors in Laguna’s previous match, his one-over par-32 score leading a 181-216 league win over Estancia at Ben Brown’s Golf Course.

The two wins gave the Breakers, under Coach Scott Finn and Assistant Coach Sean Quigley, a 10-0 league season, and an overall record of 10-3.

“I’m really proud of the team this year,” Finn said. “We had multiple guys step up and play well at different times. Although we had injuries to some of our top players, the rest of the team’s effort was amazing.

“We are looking forward to league individual championships at Skylinks next week followed by CIF individual’s and team championships in the weeks to come.”

The Breakers will compete at the Orange Coast League tournament Tuesday and Wednesday at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach.

CIF Southern Section postseason competition starts May 9 with the Individual Regionals.

Boys’ Volleyball

The Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division 2, clinched at least a share of the Orange Coast League championship Tuesday with their 25-11, 25-22, 25-17 home floor sweep of Calvary Chapel at Dugger Gym.

Senior middle blocker/outside hitter Tyler Alter had 10 kills, sophomore outside hitter Josh McManus nine kills and 11 digs, junior libero Cole Paxson 14 digs, and senior setter Isaac Wulff 34 assists, as the Breakers won their 76th consecutive league match and upped their league record to 8-0 and overall mark to 10-5.

They had an opportunity to sew up an outright league title Thursday when they took on Estancia. The score wasn’t available at press time.

The Breakers gained a two-match edge on their closest league competitor, Costa Mesa, by taking a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 home win April 21 that gave them a two-match league sweep of the Mustangs. Alter (three digs) had 14 kills, sophomore opposite Sam Burgi (seven digs) and junior outside hitter Pete Obradovich (five digs) both had 12 kills, Paxson had 16 digs, and Wulff 43 assists.

The Breakers will compete Friday and Saturday in the 30-team Redondo Union Varsity Classic Tournament. They are the No. 2-seed in Pool 3 with No. 1 Redondo Union and No. 3 Rio Mesa. Pool play begins at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The Breakers play twice Friday at Redondo Union, opening against Rio Mesa before taking on the host Sea Hawks (tied No. 10, Division 1).

The tournament resumes at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

The Breakers will play three matches in a three-day period next week. They host Lakewood (No. 9, Division 2) in a 6:15 p.m. nonleague match Monday, end league play against Saddleback at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, and complete the regular season at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday with a nonleague match at Dana Hills.

Also next week, the boys’ volleyball program will host its 33rd annual Alumni Game May 6 at Dugger Gym. Former players and fans are urged to attend as the program celebrates 45 years of volleyball. The junior varsity/frosh-soph preliminary match starts at 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity match at 6:30 p.m.

Track and Field

The Breakers competed Saturday at the Orange County Championships at Mission Viejo High. The girls’ varsity team finished in 13th place in the team standings which was led by Mission Viejo.

Girls’ varsity: 1,600 meter run, rated (Ana Kelly, 5:49.46, 23rd); 100 meter hurdles (Christine Johnson, 19.23, 48th); 1,600 meter run, seeded (Pearl Shoemaker, 5:29.05, 23rd); 400 meter dash (Coco Putnam, 57.89, sixth; Lauren McDonnell, 1:06.51, 44th); 800 meter run (Regan Caraher, 2:26.67, 22nd; Calista Helms, 2:32.30, 40th); 300 meter hurdles (Coco Putnam, 45.68, fourth); 3,200 meter run (Taylor Alvarez, 12:14.53, 30th); Shot put (Jackie Cenan, 38-00.05, fourth; Malia Helms, 34-2.00, 12th); High jump (Uta Urushido, 4-08.00, 13th).

Boys’ varsity: 1,600 meter run, rated (Drake Butler, 4:35.85, 16th; Luc LaMontagne, 4:37.05, 19th ); 110 meter hurdles (Charlie Warner, 16.21, 17th; Wyatt Shipp, 17.29, 32nd); 300 meter hurdles (Brody Seebass, 40.89, 17th); High jump (Charlie Warner, 5-08, NH; Max Woodburn, 5-08, NH.

In an Orange Coast League home dual meet April 21 against Estancia, the Laguna girls’ team improved to 4-0 in league competition by defeating the Eagles, 101-21. The boys’ team squared its league record at 2-2 by edging the Eagles, 68-59.

The Breakers ended league dual meet competition with a Thursday meet against Calvary Chapel. Results weren’t available at press time.

Laguna will play host to the Orange Coast League prelims and finals next week. The prelims meet is at 2 p.m. Monday and finals are at 3 p.m. Thursday.

Boys’ Tennis

The Breakers, ranked No. 2 in CIF-SS Division 4, went to Dana Hills Monday for a nonleague match and lost to the Dolphins, 12-6. The No. 1 doubles team of Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz swept for the Breakers who fell to 14-3.

“It was a crazy weather day, as it was windy — very, very windy,” Laguna Coach Don Davis said. “The scorecards were flipping round and round and round, it was that windy. But, despite the wind, the boys focused on the match and tried to use it to their advantage when possible, so I was proud of their performance.”

Three Breakers, Ryan Gee in singles, and the doubles team of Ethan Gee/Hayden Seitz, competed last week in the CIF Boys’ portion of the 116th Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament. Ryan Gee dropped a 6-0, 6-0 singles match to Benjamin Gollin (La Jolla Country Day), and Ethan Gee/Seitz lost 6-0, 6-1 to Jansen Comadena/Brysl Libao (Redlands).

Next week, they’ll host St. Margaret’s at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and the Laguna courts are the site for the OCL Tournament which starts with league prelims at 1 p.m. Wednesday. League finals start at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Girls’ Sand Volleyball

The Breakers won twice Saturday in Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League South Coast Division play. They swept Beckman, 3-0, then defeated Saddleback Valley Christian, 2-1, in matches played at Huntington City Beach.

Laguna team results against Beckman: Katelyn Carballo/Sage Patchell won, 21-7, 21-6; Kendyl Brennan/Katie Gavin won, 21-8, 21-9; Lauren LaMontagne/Callista Wulff won, 21-6, 21-8.

Laguna team results against Saddleback Valley Christian: Carballo/Patchell, 21-15, 15-21, 15-7; Brennan/Gavin, 19-21, 16-21; LaMontagne/Wulff, 21-16, 21-5.
