Breakers own league

The Laguna Beach High girls’ cross-country team ran to an Orange Coast League championship and the boys’ team finished runner-up at the OCL Finals meet Wednesday at Irvine Park in Orange.

Sophomore Grace LaMontagne won the varsity girls’ three-mile race in 18 minutes, 1.25 seconds, and teammate Taylor Alvarez, a senior, finished in second place in 18:28.74. The Breakers took six of the top-10 placements with junior Ana Kelly (18:49.18) sixth, senior Lauryn Alvarez (18:57.34) seventh, and freshmen Molly Cohn (18:57.99) and Bella Fonk (19:11.60) eighth and ninth, respectively.

The Laguna varsity girls have won four straight OCL titles, and eight titles in the last nine years.

“The girls raced well,” Laguna girls’ Coach Steve Lalim said. “ Of the 28 girls that competed, 27 of them ran a personal best. I’m really proud of the team, and am looking forward to CIF. We’re ready.”

Two Laguna seniors, Drake Butler and Penn Neilson, had top-10 finishes in the varsity boys’ race which was won by senior Pedro Mier (15:18.44) of league champion Godinez. Butler finished in 15:41.42 and placed sixth, and Neilson was a spot behind his teammate in seventh with a time of 15:45.39.

Laguna boys’ varsity finishes: Drake Butler (15:41.42, sixth); Penn Neilson (15:45.39, seventh); Tim Andrews (15:59.39, 12th); Luc LaMontagne (15:59.61, 13th); Ayrton Svenson (15:59.88 , 14th); Ryan Whitlock (16:01.22, 15th); William Kramer (16:27.54, 18th).

Also at league finals, both the Laguna girls’ junior varsity and boys’ frosh/soph team won their respective division races, and the boys’ JV team placed third in its division. The JV girls’ team was led by junior Sabrina Flagstad who won the race in 19:23.50. Breakers freshman Emily Engel (20:42.29) was second, and junior Callista Helms (21:05.15) fourth. In the boys’ JV run, senior Mason Pitz (17:24.59) and junior Wyatt Shipp (17:34.88) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Breakers’ varsity teams next will compete Nov. 14 at the CIF Southern Section Cross-Country Championships Prelims Meet at Riverside Golf Course in Riverside. All division finals are Nov. 21 at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut. The 26th annual CIF State Championship Meet is Nov. 28 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

The Laguna girls are ranked fifth in Division 4; the boys’ team, No. 10 in Division 4.

Girls’ Volleyball

The Laguna program won its 100th-consecutive league match (dating to 2005) and finished Orange Coast League play 10-0 by sweeping visiting Godinez Tuesday, 25-6, 25-12, 25-11, at Dugger Gym.

Cameron Dorn had 10 kills, Katelyn Carballo eight kills and nine digs, Jamie Robbins and Sage Patchell seven kills apiece, Jaynie Hexberg 13 digs, Cassidy Vida eight digs, and Aspen Rocha 35 assists.

The 2015 OCL championship gave Laguna its 11th-straight league title and 35th overall (since 1974) in 42 seasons. The program has qualified for the CIF Southern Section 42 times in the 44-year history of the playoffs.

The Breakers, 18-10 overall and ranked fifth in CIF-SS Division 2AA, concluded regular-season play Thursday with a nonleague match against Sage Hill. The score wasn’t available at press time.

Laguna is 100-36 overall in postseason play, and will begin the Division 2AA tournament with a home game Tuesday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent. The girls’ volleyball playoff pairings will be released Friday. Wild-card games are Saturday.

Girls’ Golf

The Orange Coast League champion Breakers finished in 20th-place Monday at the CIF Southern Section Southern Division Team Championships at Lakewood Country Club (par 74).

BellaRose Robinson had the low score (95) for Laguna. Other scores from the Breakers: Haley Rovner (115), Hailey McCullough (121), Sarah Hollinshead (123), Hannah Burnett (136).

Laguna senior Murphy Thompson (ill) did not compete, Assistant Coach Sean Quigley said.

Whittier La Serna and Corona del Mar both finished with a 390 score, but La Serna won the title by virtue of the scores from each team’s sixth player (La Serna 90, Corona del Mar 95).

The Breakers, the No. 2 team in CIF-SS Division 3, concluded regular-season play this week with road games against Capistrano Valley Thursday and Newport Harbor Friday. Scores from both games weren’t available at press time.

Orange Coast League champion and defending Division 3 champ Laguna will begin postseason play Wednesday hosting a first-round game. Pairings for the CIF-SS playoffs will be released Saturday.
