Crowds line up at Segerstrom Center for ‘Hamilton’ tickets

Hundreds of eager theater-goers lined up outside the Segerstrom Center for the Arts on Monday morning for their chance to buy tickets to the Tony Award-winning musical “Hamilton,” which comes to the Costa Mesa venue for its Orange County debut May 8-27.

The center handed out numbered wristbands beginning at 7 a.m. for the crowd queued up before the box office opened at 9 a.m. Ticket prices ranged from $80.75 to $200.75, with a select number of premium seats available for $600.75.

The idea was to have people relax at the center’s Julianne and George Argyros Plaza while waiting to have their numbers called, said Tim Dunn, public relations director for the Segerstrom Center.

For those who couldn’t get a ticket Monday, a ticket lottery will be held later for all performances. Details will be announced closer to the show’s arrival.

“Hamilton” tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from the West Indies who became the United States’ first treasury secretary. The musical, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, features a score of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway-style show tunes.

From 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, the center will invite fans to the Argyros Plaza for “Hamiltunes: An American Sing-Along.” Costumes are encouraged. The free event will be hosted by three-time Emmy Award-nominated Broadway conductor, pianist and comedian Seth Rudetsky.
