3 Pulitzer winners among upcoming Witte Lecture Series speakers in Newport Beach

Three Pulitzer Prize winners are on the schedule for the Newport Beach Public Library Foundation’s 2016-17 Witte Lecture Series, which begins Oct. 29.

The series brings “renowned speakers to the library, providing the public a forum for ideas and conversation about the environment, geopolitics, science, technology, economy, the arts and humanities and other relevant issues of our times,” according to the foundation.

The series’ 20th season will feature five speakers at the Central Library, 1000 Avocado Ave.:

7 p.m. Oct. 29: Lynsey Addario. The Pulitzer-winning photojournalist and author of the book “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War” will discuss her career of photographing conflict-torn areas such as Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya for The New York Times, National Geographic and Time magazine.

7 p.m. Feb. 10: Jon Meacham. The Pulitzer-winning presidential historian will explore what 21st-century leaders in different fields can learn from great moments of the past. The author of books including “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush” and “American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House” is executive vice president and executive editor of Random House Publishing Group. He also is also a contributing editor at Time magazine.

7 p.m. March 3 and 2 p.m. March 4: Joe Nocera. The op-ed columnist for The New York Times has written repeatedly about the lack of pay for players in the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. as coaches, athletic directors and conference commissioners make millions. His latest book is “Indentured: The Inside Story of the Rebellion Against the NCAA.”

7 p.m. April 7 and 2 p.m. April 8: Wade Davis. The professor of anthropology at the University of British Columbia will discuss the world’s indigenous cultures in a talk titled “The Wayfinders: Why Ancient Wisdom Matters in the Modern World.” The National Geographic Society named Wade, a member of its Explorers Council, one of the Explorers for the Millennium. He is the author 19 books, including “The Serpent and the Rainbow” and “The Wayfinders.”

7 p.m. April 28 and 2 p.m. April 29: Isabel Wilkerson. The first black woman in American journalism to win a Pulitzer Prize — for her work as The New York Times’ Chicago bureau chief — will address persistent racial injustice as a national challenge and how history may offer lessons on how to resolve it.

Tickets are $50 per person for evening lectures (including a wine and music reception at 6:30 p.m.) and $35 for afternoon lectures. All events include a Q&A and post-lecture book signing, dessert and coffee. Library Foundation members can get a $5 discount.
