Around Town: Newport Dunes to host Asian Pacific Festival

The Asian Pacific Festival on Saturday and Sunday at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort will present live music, cultural exhibits, hip-hop competitions, a children’s art contest, ethnic fashions, authentic Asian foods, carnival rides and beer and wine tasting.

The festival will display arts and culture of China, Japan, Korea, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand and Cambodia.

“This is truly a fantastic and dynamic weekend event for all families, both Asian and non-Asian,” Newport Dunes Vice President and General Manager Andrew Theodorou said in a statement.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $5 per day (free for children 6 and younger).

Fundraiser will benefit Aerospace Education Foundation of H.B.

The Boeing Co. will present an inaugural fundraising gala for the nonprofit Aerospace Education Foundation of Huntington Beach on Saturday evening to promote careers in aerospace and aviation.

The event at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa will begin at 6 p.m. with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction, followed by a meet and greet with performers from this weekend’s Breitling Huntington Beach Airshow and a live auction.

United Cerebral Palsy golf tournament Monday at Pelican Hill

United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County will present its 22nd Life Without Limits Autumn Golf Classic on Monday at The Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast.

Proceeds from the event will go to help people with developmental disabilities including autism, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, according to a news release.

The entry fee for individual golfers is $600. Attendees will get a continental breakfast, a barbecue lunch, a cocktail reception and a dinner with live and silent auctions.

Young community service enthusiasts can enter scholarship contest

The Montage resort in Laguna Beach has opened its fourth annual Montage Memory Makers contest to 13- through 17-year-olds seeking scholarships for higher education.

Contestants will be judged on their volunteer efforts, community service achievements and how their service inspires others, according to a news release.

Ten finalists will be chosen, and five winners will be selected by a panel of judges including Montage Hotels & Resorts Chief Executive Alan Fuerstman. The winners will be announced Jan. 5.

Festival of Children Foundation challenge winners perform at arts school

Prize winners in a National Child Awareness Month Talent Challenge created by the Costa Mesa-based Festival of Children Foundation performed Tuesday at the Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana.

San Diego bus driver and rapper Vee “Vrsatyl” Meadows won first place in the video contest with his original song “Born This Way.” The video features two of his co-workers who have children with autism. Meadows’ designated charity, the Autism Society of America, won a $50,000 donation.

Laguna Beach center calls on students to raise money to help seals and sea lions

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach has opened registration for school classrooms to sign up and raise donations to help rehabilitate injured and sick seals and sea lions.

Classes that raise $1,000 will be invited to watch a sea lion release. Those that raise $2,000 will win an engraved brick in the center’s yard. Those that raise the most money will get to name a sea lion.
