The California Highway Patrol is seeking the public’s help in identifying the driver of a white sedan who allegedly fled the scene of a traffic collision on the northbound 405 Freeway that left two people dead in Costa Mesa on Friday night.

Authorities said the crash occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m., when the driver of a silver Audi A4 abruptly changed lanes and lost control of the vehicle.

The Audi veered west and collided with a red Dodge Challenger before crashing into the concrete center divider north of Harbor Boulevard, according to the CHP. The Audi came to a stop in the carpool lane.

A Mercury sedan then struck the side of the Audi, authorities said. The impact ejected the Audi’s driver, a 42-year-old man, onto the freeway.

At that point another vehicle — identified only as a white sedan — struck the man. That driver then fled the scene, according to the CHP.

Both the driver of the Audi and a passenger, a 46-year-old woman, suffered fatal injuries. Their names had not been released as of Monday evening, pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the Mercury, 23-year old Bingying Ma, and a passenger, 24-year-old Shihao Wang, were transported to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana with injuries described as minor and moderate, respectively, according to the CHP.

Anyone with information about the collision — or the white sedan or its driver — is asked to contact CHP Officer D. Beckton at (714) 567-6000. Authorities say the front of the vehicle could be damaged.
