A 44-year-old Huntington Beach man was unloading a piano from a trailer Friday in the Bay Area city of Fremont when he was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by a man suspected of being on drugs, police said.

Fremont police received a report of the crash at 9:58 a.m. Officers found a 2013 Nissan Rogue impaled on the back of a utility trailer.

A man was unconscious in the driver’s seat of the Nissan, and a pedestrian was lying on a grass median, authorities said.

Paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. Authorities suspect he was trying to move the piano into a nearby residence. His name was not released Friday.

Police believe the driver, a 57-year-old Fremont resident, lost control of the vehicle and struck the trailer and the pedestrian. The trailer and the pickup it was connected to were parked legally, police said.

The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries. He was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, causing a fatal injury.
