About 30 firefighters extinguished the blaze within 10 minutes, Lopez said. He said the fire caused about $40,000 in property damage and a loss of $10,000 to the contents.

The three residents of the apartment were not home at the time, but three birds and a cat were lost in the fire, Lopez said.

He said the fire is still under investigation but is believed to have originated in the kitchen.
