The joyous spirit of the Huntington Harbour Boat Parade was darkened by tragedy when a 59-year-old woman fell into the water and died during an after-party late Saturday, police said.

Authorities identified the woman Tuesday as Karen Dewolf-Brown of Quail Valley in Riverside County.

Dewolf-Brown’s family was on a boat near the docks in the 16400 block of Pacific Coast Highway at about 11:15 p.m. when they noticed she was missing, said Huntington Beach police Lt. Tom Weizoerick.

About 20 minutes later, someone found her face down in the water nearby. Authorities pulled her out and performed CPR. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to police.

It was not immediately clear why she fell into the water or whether alcohol was a factor.
