Huntington Beach police are advising ride-share drivers to pull into nearby parking lots when picking up passengers, especially downtown.

“More and more people are using ride-share, such as Lyft and Uber, after consuming alcohol, and there has been a noticeable increase of this in the downtown area,” the Huntington Beach Police Department said in a Facebook post. “We commend those on making the smart decision to not drink and drive. We want to remind Uber and Lyft drivers not to stop in the middle of Main Street to pick up passengers.”

Officers in the downtown area will begin warning drivers with fliers to obey the state vehicle code that makes it illegal for vehicles to impede or block the normal flow of traffic.

Failure to comply with the vehicle code could result in a traffic citation, police said.

“We ask drivers to pull into a parking space, along a curb (that isn’t red), or into a parking lot to pick up passengers,” police said in the post. “Main Street becomes very crowded with traffic on the weekends, and during the summer, and stopping in the middle of the street to pick up passengers disrupts the normal flow of traffic.”

Police encouraged passengers of Uber and Lyft vehicles to wait at locations where the driver can pick them up legally without stopping traffic.
