High surf and rip currents expected along local beaches through Friday

People heading to local beaches to soak up the summer sun will be met with high surf and rip currents late Wednesday and continuing through Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Waves in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach are expected to be generally 4 to 6 feet. However, some spots in Newport and Huntington could see sets in the 7-foot range, according to the forecast.

“It’s not going to be as big as some of the previous swells we’ve seen this summer,” said Newport Beach lifeguard Battalion Chief Mike Halphide.

However, Halphide said warning flags likely will be posted at key surf spots such as Newport Point, the Wedge and along West Newport.

Tepid ocean water, which has hovered around 74 degrees in recent weeks, has kept swimmers frolicking in the surf this summer. But with strong rip currents expected with the elevated surf this week, officials are warning beach-goers to check with lifeguards before entering the water.

The waves are expected to die down by Saturday, according to the weather service.
