Mesa Water allows watering on any day

Mesa Water District customers can now water outside on whatever day they like after district board members voted unanimously Thursday to lift some restrictions on outdoor watering.

Gone is the Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday schedule that customers have had to stick to since May. Now, Mesa Water’s 110,000 customers in Costa Mesa and portions of Newport Beach can water their yards on the days that work best for them, according to district spokeswoman Noelle Collins.

Some restrictions remain, though. Customers are still only allowed to water outdoors before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m. and are prohibited from watering their yards when it’s raining and for 48 hours afterward.

Also still in place is a ban on the use of use of potable water for irrigating street medians.

Mesa Water’s three-day-a-week watering schedule had been expected to be in place through September. Those plans changed after the state adopted new regulations allowing districts to set their own conservation standards based on their water supply and demand.

Previously, state water regulators had set specific savings levels for water agencies.

After analyzing sources of drinking water available for the next three years, Mesa Water determined “that all water supply needs are capable of being met without mandatory conservation,” Collins wrote in an email this week.
