College Roundup: Vanguard baseball moves to 10-1

Doubleheader

SACRAMENTO — Visiting Vanguard completed a sweep of the three-game Golden State Athletic Conference series by winning, 15-4, and 11-1 on Saturday at William Jessup.

The No. 22-ranked Lions (10-1, 3-0 in conference) amassed 22 hits in the opener, when Jose Rojas was three for four and Brandon Sandoval was two for three with two runs batted in.

Shane Eilas-Calles was two for four with two RBIs, Paul Keating was two for five with two RBIs and Brock Eissman was three for seven with one RBI to pace the Lions.

Ryan Heinle allowed one run and seven hits over five innings to improve to 3-0.

In Game 2, freshman Tyler Steele improved to 3-0 by allowing three hits and one earned run in three innngs.

Rojas was two for four with three RBIs, Keating was two for four with two RBIs, Sandoval and Justin Vega had two hits and one RBI apiece, while Eissman was two for four.

William Jessup is 0-9, 0-3.

SACRAMENTO — Brandon Sandoval went three for five with two runs batted in and one stolen base to lead the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener on Friday.

Sean Isaac allowed two hits and one run and struck out 15 in 7 1/3 innings to improve to 4-0 and Michael Jordan threw 1 2/3 hitless innings to post his first save.

Dylan Ramie also drove in a run for the No. 22-ranked Lions.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

ANTELOPE VALLEY — Visiting Vanguard University swept two nonconference games Saturday, winning the first game, 10-0, and earning a 10-6 win in Game 2.

Taylor Wilson was four for four with two runs batted in and Amber Huffman was two for three with one RBI in Game 1, in which Alexandra Olvera allowed two hits in five innings to earn the complete-game shutout.

Payton Ross and Kristyn Whitley each had a pair of RBIs.

In Game 2, Summer Penner (one RBI) and Wilson were both three for five, while Samantha Shaffer was three for three with one RBI.

Lindsey Sullivan, Whitley and Kaitlin Estes all had two hits and two RBIs.

Doubleheader

The host Lions split against Holly Names, earning a 7-0 win in the first game, then dropping a 4-2 decision on Friday.

In Game 1, Payton Ross was two for three with four runs batted in to pace a six-hit attack.

Alexandra Olvera (five hits in five innings) and Kolbi Tonini (one hit in two innings) combined for the shutout.

In the second game, Kristyn Whitley and Summer Penner were both one for three with one RBI for Vanguard.

Cal State Northridge 62, UC Irvine 48

NORTHRIDGE — Tayla Jackson had 17 points to lead the visiting Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Jackson was eight for 14 from the field for UCI (4-21, 1-10 in conference).

Irene Chavez had 12 points and a team-best three steals for UCI.

CSUN is 6-18, 4-6.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Don Kirby Invitational

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — UC Irvine sophomore Simone Buchanan broke the school record in the 400 meters to highlight Anteaters competing on Saturday.

Buchanan’s time of 56.41 seconds bettered the previous standard of 56.73 set by Ericka Newell in 2012.

In the 60-meter semifinals, Persis William-Mensah ran 7.52, narrowly missing a trip to the final.

The Anteaters compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 26-27 in Seattle.
