College Roundup: VU baseball sweeps Bethesda

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University capped a three-game nonconference series sweep of Bethesda by sweeping two games Saturday.

The No. 13-ranked Lions won the opener, 6-2, then prevailed, 11-8 to improve to 30-9-1.

Jose Rojas hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs to help lead the way in Game 2.

Matt Harris was two for four with three RBIs, Trai Patrick was two for three with two RBIs, and Paul Keating and Kevin Bettencourt had two hits apiece in the second game, won by Akoni Arriaga in relief.

In the opener, Brandon Sandoval went four for five with two RBIs and Sam Neufeld was three for four with one RBI.

Michael Ostrea earned the relief win and is not 3-0.

Senior closer Michael Jordan notched his 13th save of the season in Game 2.

On Friday, Vanguard senior Sean Isaac allowed six hits and one earned run, while striking out 10 to key the Lions’ 4-1 triumph. Isaac is 10-1 this season.

Harris drove in two runs, while Neufeld and Rojas each had a pair of hits for the winners.

Jordan recorded a save.

After the weekend, Bethesda is 23-18.

Orange Coast 8, Irvine Valley 2

Sophomore Jack Pabich pitched seven strong innings to pace the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Pabich allowed eight hits and two earned runs to improve to 3-1.

J.T. Navarro went three for four with two runs, while Chris Prescott, J.T. McLellan and Jake Scott had two hits apiece for OCC (15-12, 6-6 in conference).

IVC is 12-15, 3-9.
