College Roundup: UCI edges UC Davis

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 6, UC Davis 4

DAVIS — The visiting Anteaters stole home twice in a three-run sixth inning that broke a 3-3 tie and secured the Big West Conference win on Saturday.

Wyatt Castro and Cole Kreuter stole home in the deciding rally, that helped UCI (21-14, 5-6 in conference) even the series at one game apiece.

Kreuter was two for four with one run batted in and two runs, while Castro was two for three with one RBI, one run and two stolen bases.

Mitchell Holland was two for four with one RBI to help key UCI’s 11-hit attack.

Miles Glazier pitched 2 1/3 relief innings to earn the win and he is now 2-0.

Calvin Faucher blanked the Aggies for 1 1/3 innings to notch his sixth save.

UC Davis is 9-23, 2-9.

The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.

Orange Coast 6, Riverside 3

RIVERSIDE — Sophomore Jack Pabich threw the Pirates’ first complete game of the year in the Orange Empire Conference road game on Saturday.

Pabich allowed eight hits and three runs to improve to 4-2.

Mondesi Gutierrez (two runs batted in), J.T. Navarro (two stolen bases), Jake Scott and Chris Prescott all had two hits apiece for the winners (16-17, 7-11 in conference).

Riverside is 19-14, 7-11.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University swept a pair from Biola to complete the regular season on Saturday.

The Lions earned a 1-0 win in Game 1, followed by a 6-2 triumph.

In the opener, Kristyn Whitley doubled, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on a groundout by Samantha Shaffer in the fifth inning for the difference.

Taylor Wilson had the other hit for the Lions.

Alexandra Olvera allowed three hits in seven innings to earn the win and improve to 17-8.

Shaffer was two for two with four runs batted in to lead the Lions in the second game.

Vanguard (33-20, 14-10 in conference), finishes third in the conference and will continue in the GSAC Tournament, Thursday through Saturday at Menlo College.

Biola is 21-30-1, 7-17.
