Local players earn All-CIF honors

Huntington Beach High’s Nick Pratto earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section honors.

Nick Pratto and Hagen Danner, who both recently graduated from Huntington Beach High, made the All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 first team in baseball, and Corona del Mar incoming senior J.T. Schwartz and Laguna Beach graduate Dante Faicchio were on the Division 2 first team.

Pratto and Danner led the Oilers (28-5, 13-2 in league) to a Sunset League championship, the program’s third in four years, and the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Pratto and Danner went in the first and second rounds, respectively, in the recent Major League Baseball Draft. Pratto went No. 14 overall to the Kansas City Royals and Danner No. 61 to the Toronto Blue Jays.

Pratto, who played first base and pitched, batted .330 with nine home runs and 22 runs batted in.

Pratto boasted a .496 on-base percentage and a .691 slugging percentage. He scored 33 runs, walked 30 times, had six doubles and one triple and stole seven of nine bases.

Pratto went 5-1 with a save and a 0.99 earned-run average.

The left-hander threw two shutouts, and he had 66 strikeouts and seven walks in 49 1/3 innings.

Pratto shared the Sunset League MVP award with Danner, and he made the All-Orange County first team.

Danner, a pitcher and catcher, finished 11-1 with a 1.21 ERA.

The right-hander struck out 92 and walked 19 in 63 1/3 innings.

Danner tossed one complete game, coming in a 4-1 win against San Jose Bellarmine Prep in the Boras Classic state tournament championship at UCLA’s Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Danner hit .350 with 12 home runs, a Huntington Beach single-season record, and 40 RBIs.

Danner had a .790 slugging percentage and a .468 on-base percentage. He doubled eight times, scored 22 runs and walked 23 times.

Danner was the Orange County Player of the Year.

Schwartz contributed to bringing a Pacific Coast League title to CdM (20-7, 12-3), the program’s first since 2006.

Schwartz, the Pacific Coast League MVP, batted .459 with four home runs and 24 RBIs.

Schwartz finished with 11 doubles, a .520 on-base percentage and a .729 slugging percentage. He had 28 runs and 10 walks.

Schwartz, who is committed to UCLA, made the All-Orange County second team.

Faicchio lifted Laguna Beach (22-9 overall) to a 15-0 Orange Coast League championship and the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs.

The Orange Coast League MVP hit .439 with three home runs and 27 RBIs.

He produced 21 doubles and one triple, scored 49 runs and swiped 10 bases.

Faicchio, a third-team All-Orange County pick, had a .496 on-base percentage and a .719 slugging percentage.

Seven players from the area earned second-team All-CIF accolades. Mater Dei senior catcher Blake Hunt, a Costa Mesa resident, made it in Division 1, CdM junior center fielder Preston Hartsell in Division 2, Laguna Beach junior pitcher Jack Loechner in Division 2, Sage Hill senior pitcher Brett Super and sophomore pitcher Ashwin Chona in Division 3, and Estancia senior shortstop Colin Gardner and junior designated hitter Brian Rodriguez in Division 5.
