Ocean View football trio makes All-Golden West League first team

Ocean View High seniors Nathaniel Washington and Andrew Helmer, and junior linebacker Alex Nieves received first-team All-Golden West League honors in football.

The trio helped the Seahawks (5-5, 1-4 in league) to a fifth-place finish.

Washington, a wide receiver, defensive back and kick returner, led Ocean View in receptions (43), receiving yards (749) and receiving touchdowns (six). On defense, Washington made 45 tackles, broke up 15 passes, intercepted a pass, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

Helmer, a lineman, finished with 22 pancake blocks and only allowed three sacks. Helmer had 52 tackles with three sacks.

Nieves totaled a team-high 95 tackles to with one sack, one interception and one forced fumble.

Ocean View’s second-team picks were senior tight end Adam Meyer, senior running back Noah De Loera, junior quarterback Noah Hickman and senior defensive end Micah Cianca.

Santa Ana senior Damian Macias, a quarterback and defensive back, was named the Golden West League MVP.

The other players collecting top league awards were Orange senior wide receiver Syrus Collins, who was the Offensive Player of the Year, and Segerstrom junior lineman Emerson Aldana and Santa Ana junior linebacker Zennen Flores shared the Defensive Player of the Year award. The Lineman of the Year honor was split by Westminster senior Issaac Barrera and Santa Ana junior Nick Larriva.
