All-League Boys’ Basketball: Edison’s Walker shares Sunset League MVP

Edison High senior guard Randall Walker split the Sunset League boys’ basketball MVP award after the Chargers shared the league crown.

Walker is one of six locals making the Sunset League first team. The other five are Edison senior guard Nate Matthews, Edison junior guard David Atencio, Marina sophomore forward Jakob Alamudun, Newport Harbor senior guard Collin Pipkin, and Huntington Beach senior guard Hayden Moore.

Walker, Matthews and Atencio helped Edison (23-5, 9-1 in league) advance to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1AA playoffs. The Chargers were upset at Hemet Tahquitz, 78-64.

Walker shared the league’s top honor with Los Alamitos junior center Jacob Eyman. Walker averaged 23 points, 7.5 rebounds, five assists and 2.1 steals per game.

Walker, a three-time first-team selection, shot 49% from the field and 75% from the free-throw line.

Matthews, a repeat first-team pick, averaged 11.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and one steal per game.

Atencio averaged 7.5 points, 4.5 assists, three rebounds and 1.1 steals per game.

Alamudun averaged 15.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game.

Marina went 3-23 overall and 1-9 in league, finishing tied for last place.

Pipkin led the Sailors to a third-place tie in league with the Oilers at 5-5.

Pipkin averaged 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and four assists per game. He shot 40% from the three-point line.

Newport Harbor (17-13 overall) lost at home to Buena Park, 53-45, in the second round of the Division 2AA playoffs.

Moore also played a vital role to Huntington Beach (18-12) advancing to the second round of the Division 1A playoffs. The Oilers lost at Los Angeles Loyola, 70-64.

Moore averaged 14 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He made 59 three-pointers.

The members of the second team were Edison junior center Josh Phillips, Huntington Beach junior center Justin Brodt, Huntington Beach senior guard Drake Sueda, Newport Harbor senior guard Zach Blaine and Marina freshman guard Jordan Nowden.

Rodman is PCL MVP

Sophomore guard DJ Rodman took home the Pacific Coast League MVP award for leading the Corona del Mar High boys’ basketball team to a Pacific Coast League championship.

Rodman is on the first team with CdM junior guard Kevin Kobrine. The two lifted the Sea Kings (22-8, 9-1 in league) to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 1A playoffs.

The Sea Kings pulled off a 68-58 upset at No. 7-ranked Compton Dominguez in the second round, before losing at home to No. 2 Pasadena, 47-44, in the quarterfinals.

Rodman averaged 20 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.

Kobrine averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game.

Ben Coffman, a junior guard, made the second team.

Locals honored in Orange Coast League

Laguna Beach High junior guards Grady Morgan and Charlie Rounaghi, Costa Mesa sophomore guards Nico Dasca and Osman Hefner, and Estancia senior guard Evan Pettingill earned first-team All-Orange Coast League accolades in boys’ basketball.

Rounaghi and Morgan led the Breakers to a runner-up finish in league and the second round of the Division 3AA playoffs.

Dasca and Hefner were part of a Costa Mesa team taking third in league and reaching the Division 4AA playoffs.

Morgan averaged 13 points per game and Rounaghi 9.2 points.

The Breakers (19-11, 7-3 in league) lost at No. 2-seeded Crean Lutheran, 54-49, in overtime.

Dasca averaged 17.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.3 steals per game. He shot 45% from the field.

Hefner averaged 13.1 points and 1.2 steals per game.

The Mustangs (10-18, 6-4) lost in the first round at Garden Grove, 52-50.

Pettingill averaged 13.3 points per game for the fourth-place Eagles (11-13, 4-6), who missed the playoffs.

The locals on the second team included Laguna Beach junior Adam Armstrong and Estancia junior Cameron Jones.

Godinez senior Ramon Lopez-Felix was named the Orange Coast League MVP.

Ocean View’s Head, Harvey are co-MVPs

Ocean View High juniors Paul Head and Mehkel Harvey shared the Golden West League MVP award in boys’ basketball for leading the Seahawks to their second straight undefeated campaign.

Head, a guard, averaged 15.1 points, four assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. He made 57 three-pointers.

Harvey, a 6-foot-8 center, averaged 14.7 points, 11 rebounds, 5.4 blocks and 1.1 steals per game.

The duo helped Ocean View (22-7, 10-0 in league) advance to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoffs. The host Seahawks lost to Montebello Schurr, 74-63.

Ocean View junior guard Seth Mishler made the first team. He averaged 9.4 points and 2.2 three-pointers per game.

Ocean View sophomore forward Vincent Caiazzo was a second-team pick.

Sage Hill’s Sadeghi earns honors

Sage Hill School senior guard Dominic Sadeghi made the first-team All-Academy League in boys’ basketball.

Sadeghi averaged 17 points per game, helping the Lightning to a third-place finish in league and the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4A playoffs.

Sage Hill (18-8, 8-4 in league) beat Palos Verdes Chadwick, 63-55, in the first round, marking the program’s first postseason win since the 2009-10 season. In the next round, Sage Hill lost at Romoland Heritage, 61-53.

Sage Hill sophomore Johnny King and senior Max Nanula were second-team selections, as well as Brethren Christian junior Isaiah Vargas.

Sage Hill senior Alex Toubia and Brethren Christian senior Jake McKay were honorable mentions.

Crean Lutheran senior guard Michael Bagatourian was the Academy League MVP.
