Lobos collect honors

Los Amigos High senior Steven Hernandez shared the Garden Grove League MVP award on offense for helping the football team to a second-place tie in league.

Hernandez, who played quarterback and running back, rushed 268 times for 1,906 yards, the second-best total in Orange County, and 20 touchdowns. He completed 35 of 77 passes for 414 yards and five touchdowns, with four interceptions.

Hernandez also played cornerback. He finished with 47 tackles, one interception and broke up five passes.

Hernandez, who shared the offensive honor with Rancho Alamitos senior quarterback Blake Culbert, is one of six Los Amigos players to make the first team. The others are senior offensive linemen Brian Ruiz and Solomon Fetaliaga, senior running back Edgar Galindo, senior linebacker Alexander Contreras and senior defensive back Joseph Deluna.

The Lobos (6-5, 3-2 in league) shared second in league with La Quinta and Rancho Alamitos. They earned a berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 12 playoffs, losing in the first round at No. 2-seeded Rancho Mirage, 42-8.

Ruiz and Fetaliaga, a repeat first-team selection, paved the way for Los Amigos to amass 3,062 yards and 34 touchdowns on the ground.

Galindo rushed 192 times for 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns, and had five receptions for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Contreras finished with 90 tackles and two sacks.

Deluna had 62 tackles, one interception and broke up eight passes.

Representing Los Amigos on the second team were senior defensive linemen Walter Santana and Joseph Vera, and senior linebacker Zachary Boyer.

Garden Grove senior quarterback Ruben Mendoza was the league MVP, Garden Grove senior defensive back Romario Moemoe was the Defensive MVP, and Garden Grove junior Peselao Gauta was the Lineman of the Year.

La Quinta Coach Andy Diaz was Coach of the Year.
