Local tennis players compete at CIF Individuals

Share

The high school tennis career of Sage Hill School senior Adam Langevin is almost complete, but not quite.

Langevin and a handful of other Coastal sports tennis players will compete Thursday in the CIF Southern Section Individual Tennis Sectionals, which take place at five sites throughout Southern California.

Singles players and doubles teams had to finish in first or second place in their respective leagues to qualify for the CIF Individuals tournament. Thursday’s sectional consists of the first three rounds of the tournament, with winners advancing to either the round of 32 or directly to the round of 16 next week.

Langevin, the Academy League singles champion who helped Sage Hill win the league title this season and advance to the CIF Southern Section Division 2 semifinals, will be competing at the University of Redlands. So will his teammate, Sage freshman Rohun Krishnan, who was the league singles runner up, as well as the Lightning’s league doubles champions of Steven Ferry and Emin Torlic.

Langevin advanced to the second round of CIF Individuals last year as a junior.

Newport Harbor’s David Lee and Mark Schaefer, the Sunset League doubles champions, will play Thursday at Whittier Narrows Tennis Center. So will Sailors freshman Max McKennon, the league’s singles finalist. The three players helped Newport as a team make the Division 2 semifinals.

The most local players will be at the Jack Kramer Club in Rolling Hills Estates. CdM’s Kyle Pham and Diego Fernandez del Valle, the Pacific Coast League doubles runners-up, will compete there. So will six players from Laguna Beach, which swept the Orange Coast League tournament.

Breakers singles player Mason Lebby, the league champion, will compete along with his teammate Ethan Gee, who was the league runner-up. The Breakers doubles teams of Blake Hawkins and Jacob Pieteg, as well as Francis Pillsbury and Kyle Herkins, also will be in action.

Gee and Lebby each competed in doubles last year at the Individuals tournament, with different teammates. Lebby and his partner lost in the first round to Lee and Schaefer, while Gee and his partner fell in the second round.

The Ocean View doubles team of senior Spencer Hagaman and junior Kyle Tsai also will compete at the Jack Kramer Club on Thursday. Hagaman and Tsai were the runners up in the Golden West League.
