Estancia wins All-Sports Cup for seventh straight year

For the seventh straight year Estancia High won the All-Sports Cup, the trophy for the winner of the cross-town rivalry of the Eagles against Costa Mesa in all varsity sports.

This is the seventh year of the trophy’s existence.

Estancia, which was honored recently with a complimentary lunch at the school catered by Newport Rib Company, won the All-Sports Cup, 120-80, with points tabulated for each victory.

The Eagles win in football and sweep in baseball appeared to make the biggest difference. In the football Battle for the Bell, Estancia shut out the Mustangs, 23-0, to earn 15 points in the All-Sports Cup standings. Five points are awarded for each win in the rivalry, except for football, where 15 points can be won.

Costa Mesa earned 10 points each for wins in boys’ basketball and boys’ golf.

Last year, the Mustangs drew closer than this year, 107.5-82.5.

John Ursini, owner of Newport Rib Company and an Estancia High alumnus, says an Eagles’ Cup victory won’t be easy next year.

“Next year looks to be the best chance Costa Mesa has to steal the trophy (and the lunch) in a long time,” he said in an email. “I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mustangs were putting on Rib Company bibs next year at this time. Eagles better get their game faces on if they expect to win next year.”
