Team USA women to play for gold

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Corona del Mar High alumna Maddie Musselman scored four goals as the U.S. women’s water polo senior national team beat Russia, 14-9, in the FINA World Championships semifinals on Wednesday.

Former Los Alamitos star Rachel Fattal had five goals for Team USA, which will play Spain for the title on Friday at 11:30 a.m. Pacific time. The match will air live on the Olympic Channel, and online streaming is available here.

Musselman (UCLA) scored all four of her goals in the first half for Team USA, which fell behind Russia by two goals twice in the first quarter before the team rallied for an 11-5 halftime lead.

Former Edison High star Alys Williams (UCLA) added a goal in the fourth quarter for Team USA, which also has Laguna Beach High alumni Makenzie and Aria Fischer on its roster and features Breakers coach Ethan Damato as an assistant coach.

Gabby Stone made 11 saves for Team USA and captain Maggie Steffens added three goals.

On Friday, Team USA will be looking to win its record fifth FINA World Championship. The Americans are the only women’s team with four titles after winning the tournament in 2003, 2007, 2009 and 2015.
