The Sage Hill School girls’ basketball team held on in the waning seconds on Monday night to defeat host Ocean View 49-48 in the Hawk Holiday Classic.

After the Lightning threw the inbounds pass out of bounds with 3.4 seconds remaining, Ocean View’s Erica Almiranez was able to catch up with a lead pass near midcourt. Her bank shot in the key was no good, and Sage Hill came away with an overtime victory.

“The result is the result,” Lightning coach Kerwin Walters said. “We fumbled [the inbounds pass] out of bounds, but we had great resiliency to come back and just defend.

“Whatever happens on the inbounds, we’ll fix those things as we go along, but that was a great win for us.”

Emily Elliott had 15 points. The freshman center converted a critical three-point play with 1:16 remaining in regulation to pull her team to within one point of the Seahawks (1-1).

Elliott finished the game nine for 11 from the free-throw line, and Sage Hill shot 76.2 percent on its free throws.

Conversely, Ocean View made just half of its 14 free-throw attempts.

The overtime period began with a three-pointer from Kenna Knollenberg at the top of the arc.

Trinity Cha had 15 points and two three-pointers for the Lightning (3-2).

Freshman Hosanna Walker had 19 points and two three-pointers to lead Ocean View.

“That freshman for Ocean View, she’s going to be a monster,” Walters said of Walker. “She has a great shot. She is crafty around the basket. Their league is in trouble. Once she fills into her own, she is going to be a handful.”

Almiranez added 11 points with a trio of three-pointers. Emi Yamasaki hit two shots from beyond the arc, including one that beat the halftime buzzer to give Ocean View a 25-17 lead.

Seahawks junior center Helen Reynolds finished with eight points after playing the second half in foul trouble.
