Local golfers compete in China

Celine Niu, who will be a sophomore at Corona del Mar High next fall, won the individual match-play portion to highlight six area competitors who took part in the Harmony Cup, a junior all-star golf competition with a team representing Asia Pacific in China.

The event, which included one round of foursome match play, four-ball match play and individual match play, was contested over two days and ended on July 16 at Jinsha Lake International Golf Club in the city of Zhengzhou.

Niu and fellow Sea Kings Malia Halafuka and Sophie Song were joined by current Newport Harbor golfer, Nicole Nesbitt, who will be a sophomore in the fall, and recent Newport Harbor graduate Madison Fernandez.

Sabrina Nesbitt, who will enter the eighth grade in the fall, is another competitor from Newport Beach who competed.

Song will be a senior next fall for the Sea Kings, for whom Halafuka will be a sophomore.

The opponents were players from China, Japan, South Korea, India and Chinese Taipai, selected from the Asia-Pacific 2015 Junior Elite Challenge.

The event featured Ryder Cup system.
